This is a true classic hook pattern, and the Wide Gape has been responsible for the capture of a huge number of large carp in the many years since its introduction. It's based on an old classic hook pattern from the 1980s and 1990s that was popular with many anglers at the time – the Maruta Kinryu – but we've improved it and made it more user-friendly by replacing the blade with an eye.
The Wide Gape features a slightly in-turned eye and a short shank, a heavy forged bend and a very sharp claw point. It can be used in a wide variety of pop-up and bottom bait presentations and once it sets, it usually stays set. For those fishing in snaggy waters, there is also a Wide Gape X version. For truly extreme conditions abroad – including fishing for giant Siamese carp or Mekong catfish in Thailand – there is an even heavier Wide Gape XX version.
For waters where barbed hooks are banned, the barbless Wide Gape B is perfect. They all come in packs of ten, with the Wide Gape in sizes 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2; the Wide Gape B in sizes 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1; the Wide Gape XX in sizes 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1; and Wide Gape X in sizes 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2.
